Fizazzle started out their Mermaid pool parties adventure over 15yrs ago with one of our first documented in water pool parties being on the 14th Sept 2010 almost 15yrs ago from today, we were doing mermaid parties prior but this was the first in the water. It made sense to do mermaid parties in water. Dont you think?
I wonder what these kids look like now?
I wonder if they remember this party like I do?
My first tail was a fabric tail which was made by a costume store – Global Mascots. Back then I wanted to make a more realistic tail but silicone was not available yet.
Its funny now that the whole mermaid world has gone back to fabric tails thou with the rise of printed realistic fabric coming in.
Check out our first ever in water fabric mermaid tail – it cost me $150 to make and that was alot for me at that time.
There was no other pool companies back then and no other mermaid performers or mermaid parties. I was a fresh new and original idea, and people loved the idea of a mermaid pool party.
My next tail was a lycra tail – I made myself – looking back it looked terrible – but it was in my eyes a step up from what I had before.as it had a fluke – which was made out of sponge. Oh that was a terrible idea also as it soaked up the water and became heavy – live and learn – dont make a mermaid tail out of sponge. This tail was very quickly retired and wasn’t used much – maybe only a few parties.
Here is one of Fizazzle performers Kelly in our Lycra tail… back in 2012
The kids still loved this thou but I always wanted better it took a while to save up the money but in 2014 I finally got my full silicone tail. Boy was it heavy. I wasn’t expecting it.
It was a full custom made silicone tail by Mertailor. This tail cost me $5k it was crazy money. I wouldn’t buy another silicone tail again.
If you know you know! Ever tried swimming in these things – ironically they are completely weightless in water but so very heavy on land. I found it very impractical for kids parties as having to carry it there was a nightmare, and moving around in it – when not in water was impossible.
So back to the drawing board with the tail – At Fizazzle we search for practicality as well as functionality, appearance and quality.
Being a performance company with multiple performers working for us we needed a costume that could adapt to fit different sizes, be durable enough to withstand the level of activity we are delivering and look great.
Our next tail was a hybrid tail by Mermaid Kariel – fabric with hand sewn scales and sequin.
This tail is by far my favourite tail I ever had – it was light weight. it looked great, the fluke was very easy to lift and it was a dream to swim in.
By far of all tails this tail is number 1. But it cost alot also and I bought it second hand – Maybe 3k. But the down side to fabric tails – the ware and tear.
We were using this tail so much it got a hole and we patched and patched it until it rally looked bad and needed to replace it.
I was so sad to see this tail go – I undid it and tried to make my own replica (replica below – not bad – I used the fluke from the original)
Anyway eventually we went back to the fabric – after finding many companies now do very realistic looking fabric tails – they still have wear and tear but they dont cost half as much as the other tails. So we can replace them after 6 months and have a new one that looks shiny again. It is easy to move around roll up and put into the bag and has enugh stretch that it fits most our performance base. What do you think of out tail progression? Which is your favourite?
Here are some of the many tails we have had through the years – we moved to pink tail as we found the kids all loving the pink styling.
